How to make a BJD corset….

I’ve always enjoyed making corsets for my dolls. Its such a skill to get them to fit just right and the structure perfect. I love making these miniature works of art and thought I would share the process again.
I’ll have a pattern available for download in my etsy shop soon. https://www.etsy.com/shop/AngelRoseCouture

So, let’s go make a BJD corset!
Fabric can be silk, printed cotton, lightweight brocade. Use a light weight stable type of fabric, although we are going to underline it with interfacing. I use a silk taffeta for lining most of the time, but a stiff organdy can be used also. I used a small floral print cotton with a silk taffeta lining and edging.

Cut all corset pieces from your main fabric choice (self fabric), from the lining and the interfacing (I used a woven fusible interfacing). Iron the interfacing to the wrong side of the self fabric pieces.  All seam allowances are 1/4″ wide unless otherwise noted.

Right side together, pin then stitch the side fronts to the front, side backs to the back, and press seams open. Right sides together stitch the front to backs at side seams. Press seams open.  Hint: ease stitch just inside the seam allowance along the edges of the corset front and clip to stitch for better manipulation around the curved part of the side front.

Prepare lining, following the same instructions omitting the interfacing.

At this time, if you would like to, top stitch any seams and add lace and trimming. You can also top stitch to add boning if you like. I did this for the larger BJD corsets.  I edged stitched all the seams on the lining for a cleaner finish inside. Now with right sides together, stitch the lining to the corset at the back seams. Turn right side out and press. Baste raw edges together.

Cut two strips of fabric on the bias, one inch wide and 2 inches longer than the bottom edge of the corset in either self or lining, or contrasting fabric if you like.   Right sides together, pin strips to the top and bottom edges of the corset, you will have extra extending from the edges. Stitch. trim seam allowance to 1/8″.  Press up.
Turn under 1/4″ on raw edges of the strips and fold over the seam allowance. Slip stitch to corset along seamline to encase seam and give a clean edge to the corset.
See- nice and clean.  From here mark for eyelets for lacing up in back. I used 3/32″ eyelets for MSD and 1/8″ eyelets for 60 cm BJD. Apply eyelets as desired.

Now you can add any other embellishments as desired. I used silk ribbon the lace up the sides and sewed tiny pearls to the front lace. I also added bows, lace to the bottom edge and a crystal charm.

Any questions, feel free to email me! Have fun creating!

Mood Fabrics…..

So let’s see-how long have I lived in Southern California?  All of my life, went to school in Los Angeles at FIDM and I have never been to Mood.  Can you believe it? Well, maybe I did once, a long time ago but I didn’t know which store it was at the time when I was shopping for bridal fabric and if it was, it wasn’t nearly as famous as it is now.

Mood Fabrics logo

Mood fabrics So what did I think?  OMG, now I know why I kind of avoided it for as long as I had because one can get into a lot of trouble there.  Granted prices are not inexpensive, but what a glorious selection of fabrics- silks especially, I was definitely in heaven.  And kudos to my hubby who was a trooper through the whole shopping experience. Actually, he found a comfy couch to sit in and just watched me go through the rolls and rolls of fabrics in front of him.  Then he  took a few pics of the store and helped me make some decisions on fabric.

A wall of fabric

I ended up with a beautiful Oscar De La Renta silk chiffon in shades of blue which is my favorite.  I also got a few other pieces, and a ton of white silk habotai for linings.  It seems I was always running out of silk habotai.  As far as the reviews of Mood on Yelp are concerned, we had a wonderful salesperson.  Aimee, who helped cut my fabric and was very entertaining to talk to.  She made my experience there pleasurable despite the apprehension I felt from the reviews about rude salespeople.  I will be making trips to Mood  a few times a year now- I really have no excuse since I really live only an hour away.  I still need to go back and check out the laces!! But at those prices I need to know what I am doing with them.

Flamme Framboise….

It’s been a while since I’ve designed anything for a Sybarite. So when I picked up this fabric, Gothica decided no one else but her would have something out of it. And why not? It  suits her coloring perfectly.flamme framboise closeflamme framboise 3

And Another Year is Over…

I can’t believe it’s been a year since I have written. Probably because I didn’t get much designing done up until recently. So just to share the past year, here are the designs from 2012:

Valentine’s Day gown

Dark Heart

Easter 2012 – For this we had a themed event on Couture Doll Shops – It’s a Mad Hatter Tea Party.  We each picked a character from Alice in Wonderland and I choose the White Rabbit.  Quite different for the rabbit huh?

Since I had a lot going on this year in my personal life, I really didn’t have many opportunities to do as much as I would have liked.  I am hoping that 2013 allows me a little more time.

This gown I did for a collection that has yet to be finished- Dark Forest.  I have about half of it done but ended up using this main gown for the Gothic themed  event on Couture Doll Shops.

Dark Forest Collection

It seems the most designing I was able to get in were the challenge for Couture Doll Shops-at least it pushed me to do and m,ake the time for something!

This was another that I still have collection planned around.  Maybe this year for resort or summer I can finally bring it to reality.  Meanwhile I sold the prototype dress.

One exciting highlight of this year was a challenge that was presented to the merchants at Couture Doll Shops sponsored b Angelic Dreamz.  We were to design a gown influenced by a character in a chosen Opera that our girl would be able to wear attending the opera for their Jamieshow FBJD.  I chose the Marriage of Figaro’s Susanna- fiance to Figaro.  Since the opera was set in the 18th c it was right up my alley in coming up with a design.   The exciting part of this contest was the winner would have their design produced and manufactured by Angelic Dreamz.  Guess what?  I won!  Look for this design to be sold in Angelic Dreamz in the spring.

The other thing that came from all that is George from Angelic Dreamz commissioned me to design and draft the pattern for his Holiday Jamieshow doll.  This was such a great opportunity.

Jamieshow Holiday

So actually towards the end of this year I started to get quite busy getting some designs finished.  SnoFlake was the DFNO (Dolls Fashion NIght OUt) on Couture Doll Shops

Kabuki was a gown that was started in the spring but never finished.  Alas, I had finally finished it. Now I have a sister gown to do for it.

My November limited edition gown was Moss.  I included a hand beaded choker and mesh hose with this.

And now to the end of the year.  My annual Holiday gown Evergreen

Evergreen full

So that was the wrap up for 2012.  I will definitely be better about blogging in 2013.  Got a new iPad for my birthday so I have the WordPress app on it.  No excuses now!

Here’s to wishing everyone a great and prosperous New Year!

CDS- Haute Couture Challenge

It’s time for another Challenge!

This time it’s a Haute Couture challenge- oohhhh right up my alley.
http://couturedollshop.blogspot.com/

The Challenge: Haute couture is the creation of exclusive, custom-fitted clothing. Clothes that fit to one person’s precise measurements are the norm. It is also defined by the opulence of fabrics used, the fabulosity of cuts performed superbly, and/or the rarity of the elements used to develop it. Haute couture is definitive; it is something you just know when you see it. And, haute couture’s exclusivity makes the privileged few who can afford it go mad! Hum…….Could haute couture also drive doll collectors this crazy? Well, we hope not – at least that isn’t our intention at all, dahlings!

So for this challenge I immediately think of the new Dior collection-and a design I have had for a while that just never came to be completely. I had started the pattern for it and was going to originally make it in blue, but gray would work too, wouldn’t it?

And who would be the perfect model for this challenge? Psyche-my FDQ Numina Grey, of course. She wears the color gray so well.

I’m using the idea of my Victorian riding habits as a base, but will use a shorter straight skirt and do some bows and flowers in the back.
I was able to get the skirt done pretty quickly since I started this thing pretty late with only less than a week before due date.

skirt almost completed

Thursday, July 8
Now the jacket was going to be a challenge. I can use the jacket pattern from my CDDC challenge 2 as a base, but I will need to change the collar on it.

collar done

Got the base of the jacket done today, tomorrow I will need to get the lining in and finish it. Time is running out. Doesn’t look like I will be able to complete the corset like I had hoped. Oh well, I’ll make it for the sale of this suit.

Jacket almost finished

Friday, July 9
Today was a busy and exhausting day. I don’t know why I wait until the last minute to do these things. Wait! I know why- because I procrastinate!! Well that and I always have so much on my plate. We did take vacation, and I have been redoing the bathroom so, this had to wait a little bit. I did get the lining finished and the suit is complete. Now on to the hat! in which this will be a whole tutorial.

the back- still needs the flowers for color

Sunday, July 11
I didn’t get a chance to work on anything yesterday. So today is finishing touches. Finish the hat and make the shoes. So here is the tutorial for making a silk top hat:

Got my pics in- now it’s just the waiting game………

Friday, July 23
I woke up late this morning-started my coffee and immediately went to the computer to see who won this challenge.
Surprise! Surprise! it was me! I really thought Mike and Ina were going to win. I thought they had a great entry with the Avatar inspiration Gaultier used. Every one did a great job and overall the whole purpose for this was to draw attention to CDS-Couture Doll Shops.

Well I can’t wait for the Cami doll- I really liked them when they first came out- let’s see what I come up for her!

As for the Haute Couture Challenge outfit? Well it will be available for purchase on my website later today.
